I saw a video the other day that got me to thinking about what goes into determining packaging for products so as to line up with advertising and branding. There are a lot of aspects that go into this process, but here I will briefly share two schools of thought and then the video. When designing packaging to reflect a brand and also advertise: 1. Simple design, let the product do the talking and walking; 2. Let the packaging do the talking and the product do the walking.

My Two Cents: I wrote this on my iBook.

According to an article in the Daily ‘Dog today, Microsoft has launched Wallop, it’s social network answer to Facebook and MySpace.

From Daily ‘Dog: “The new website, called Wallop, is bound to make a splash in the competitive pool of friend-collecting websites. Microsoft’s tagline for the site, which will offer a wide range of tools and features that will hopefully set it apart from similar pages, is ‘the exclusive social experience.’”

My Two Cents: I have seen a couple of articles mention Google and how it is playing catchup, well, I think it’s safe to say that Microsoft is playing the same game (read: Zune & Wallop). Hopefully for Bill Gates and company it isn’t a day late and a dolar short. We’ll see how Wallop fares and the Zune in November–which, by the way, it was announced this morning will be priced almost $1 more than the equivalent iPod.(Read the Reuters article here on CNN.com)

According to Business Week Google is coming out of its slumber to fight for the consumers once again. Google today announced that they will be bundling some of their popular Web-based applications like e-mail, instant messaging, Internet phone calling, schedule management and Web site creation tools–all for consumers. The media is reporting that this is a strike against Microsoft and its popular cash cow, the Office Suite.

My Two Cents: I have to agree with one of the commentors, the real winner in this Web-based battle is the consumer.

How about you, are you or your company going to benefit from Google’s move?
