You’re probably aware of the mine tragedy and ensuing fiasco that is going on in the mine country of Utah. From the onset Bob Murray, one of the executives and owners of the mining company, has been accused of not having much PR sense and to a degree I agree with that. However I was reading a story tonight online and came across a word that Murray has invoked throughout this ordeal: Lord.

Now, like I said, here is a man that all along has not been praised for his compassion, much less his PR skills, but the skeptic in me has to wonder, here’s a guy who is not from Utah but who keeps invoking and using the name and phrases associated with turning the situation over to the “Lord’s” hands. Is he really that PR clueless? I don’t know, maybe he’s trying to appeal to the hearts and minds of the state and locals knowing that a good majority of Utahns are Christians.

My Two Cents: Whether intentional o unintentional, knowing your publics is always a good thing. Mr. Murray has a lot of questions to answer and it’s hard to say whether the last few weeks have served as a case-in-point that he needs serious PR help, so my question remains, is he PR savvy or PR stupid? What do you think?

Okay, so here’s a little lesson in Public Relations. As a PR professional here in Utah, we have lots of opportunities to work with companies and help them with media relations. My boss, David Politis, is an expert spokesman and works well with the media, he just gets it — granted, he’s had plenty of time to polish his skills!

When choosing a spokesperson it is important to remember you want someone who will represent you well. For larger companies, it isn’t a bad idea to have a media policy for employees, after all, the reporter that wants the scoop doesn’t care if it’s coming from the top or the mail room, it is probably more credible coming from the mail room, for that matter.

So with this little post, I don’t intend to make any judgments about Michael Vick, his career or personal life, suffice it to say, the local attorney is looking into charges for alleged dog fighting on his property. My colleague, the Crazy Canuck, sent me this clip of Vick’s fellow footballers, and probably friends, backing and defending Vick to the media. I don’t think he asked them to say anything, much less paid them to say anything. The bottom line is that these guys aren’t doing the NFL, their teams or Michael Vick much good by “candidly” sharing their opinions with the media.

My Two Cents: Obviously this is a bit over the top, however, it well proves the fact that you should carefully choose your spokesperson. This certainly applies when the media tries to contact your friends, or employees, be careful, the media may not verify that these people are authorized to speak in your behalf.

My Two Cents: This not a PR job I want. I wouldn’t work for the U.S. Army or Raytheon. I mean this is a crisis situation, and how much do you want to bet that both parties just won’t touch the topic and let it just die down–not very good issue/crisis management by the way. I think we are definitely in an era where transparency is extremely important, a concept the government hasn’t yet embraced–actually, I wonder if they are even aware of the trend?!
